The Canadian Airports Council Pleased with the Interim Report of the Standing Committee on Transport

OTTAWA – May 20, 2005 – “It’s a breath of fresh air” said Canadian Airports Council (CAC) President and CEO, Jim Facette, in response to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Transport’s Interim Report on Air Liberalization and the Canadian Airports System issued May 19th.

Mr. Facette added, “The Committee’s recommendations clearly support much that the CAC has advocated for some time.  The cost of such services as airport security and customs should be borne by all taxpayers and not be imposed on the travelling public.”  The Standing Committee recognized the hidden cost of providing free office space and more to government agencies and calls for their elimination over a 5-year period.

Canada’s airports support the direction of Transport Minister Lapierre’s May 9th announcement on rent and chattel relief.  The Committee’s call for a more immediate reduction in airport rents supports the CAC’s longstanding policy.  The recommendation to impose rent on the 8 largest airports is further recognition that the current rent regime falls most heavily on smaller airports which are least able to manage it.

The CAC is pleased that the Committee agreed with the Minister’s decision to grant chattel payment relief to Canada’s small airports.  The relief of some $21.7 million in chattel payments provides greater stability for the future of small airports.

Although the Committee did not provide any recommendations with respect to liberalized air policy, their comments are encouraging.  The CAC looks forward to working with the Standing Committee on Transport as they seek additional information on “Open Skies” and the benefits this will bring to all Canadians.
